The benchmark journal in the railway sector

RGCF (Revue Générale des Chemins de Fer) was created in 1878.
Its purpose was – and still is – to publish original articles and research of a high scientific and technical level as well as national and international news and feature articles on guided transport modes.
The scientific and technical articles are written by engineers working or having worked in transport or rolling stock construction companies.
They are supplemented by news articles written by collaborating journalists and specialists.
Every month, RGCF thus also offers high-level news coverage about all aspects of the railway world – technical, commercial, financial.
A tie-in with the historical perspective of the issues through the journal’s documentary stock is also provided.
Born under the patronage of great railwaymen such as Émile Heurteau, General Manager of the Paris-Orléans network and Albert Sartiaux, Operations Director of the Nord network, the journal intends to pursue its mission of circulating the core know-hows of railway operations, in every sense of the term.
In a sector gradually opening up to competition and whose players are becoming global businesses, RGCF is also the ideal place to lay open the French technologies and practises in the railway world, and to give an account of the contentions driving rail’s evolution.

To quote from RGCF’s first editorial, in 1878:
"The Revue Générale des Chemins de Fer […] aims to collect and centralize all the special publications relating to the railway industry.
It intends to keep the various departments of the railways up to date about works carried out and any advancements tried or accomplished – to put it shortly, about all the technical or business events of the railway community which, either in France or abroad, progress the trade or are interest-worthy.
It will publish not only technical papers about railway construction, railway maintenance, the design and implementation of fixed plant and rolling stock, traction and so on, but also economic or financial studies, results or information pertaining to technical or commercial operations, station designs and organization, handling of freight, telegraphy and, in general, progress in electrical systems, heating and lighting of stations and trains, fares and freight rates, legal and accounting developments and more."

Editorial policy: a balance of high-level analyses and more easily grasped subjects

The journal each month offers a complete panorama of analyses about the railway industry, written by experts in their field

  • The DOSSIERS «RÉFÉRENCE» feature articles take on technical, strategic or economic issues, to help readers better understand the stakes and anticipate changes in the industry. Running from eight to twenty pages, these articles discuss the issues in depth to give the reader an exhaustive insight into the subject covered.
  • The «LES INFOS, EN FRANCE ET DANS LE MONDE», news section, covers French or international railway developments in briefer, easy-to-grasp articles.
  • Under the «DÉCRYPTAGE» heading, charts, images and computer graphics are used to yield a concise, synthetic view of the topic at hand.
  • The «PASSÉ-PRÉSENT» : heading provides perspective on a problem of yesteryear ... that is still an issue today.
  • Under the «LES LECTURES DE LA RGCF» : heading, a book is analyzed in depth every month by the editorial department; this more than just a peek into a significant publication for the railway industry.
