  • Trams: a changing and expanding concept

    Trams had pride of place in town centres, cutting through the middle of their streets before cars came on the scene. But technical progress and electrification could not prevent them from falling out of favour and being replaced by bus and metro systems, both of which are partly derived from trams. Less than a century later, trams were, however, to make a comeback in a new, improved and highly salutary guise. The word “tram” therefore conjures up different images from one era to another. Trams today are largely seen as a typical example of “soft” modes of transport, in particular in France, where they are considered a vital feature in urban renewal, and crucial to ensuring continued city access and attractiveness. The part that follows highlights the role played by the Greater Paris region (Île-de-France) as a setting for these major new developments.

  • Trams in the Greater Paris region and their context

    In the Greater Paris region, trams owe their development to local politicians, backed by Île-de-France Mobilités, determined to find efficient ways of meeting mobility needs, and to the technical solutions promoted by the major protagonists, not least RATP. The advantage of trams is that they can be a major driving force in town and country planning, helping to shape urban development or renewal schemes. The 8 tram lines described in this issue all date from after 1990 and their creation was facilitated by the flexibility, individual and collective, of the various contracting authorities.

  • Tram projects and their various components

    Like many other public transport projects involving a combination of infrastructure and rolling stock, tram systems require input from a variety of engineering specialities, if maximum reliability and performance are to be achieved. In Greater Paris, new tram systems also have to overcome a number of other constraints: they have to blend with the existing urban fabric, itself partly reshaped to cater to the new arrival, and cope with the other urban networks already in place (roads, overhead structures, drainage systems, etc.). The technical challenges are enormous (for example, as seen below, with regard to bridges and tunnels or adaptations to the urban environment). Taken together, the solutions developed add up to a series of exportable top-notch technical skills.

    Successful tram projects are contingent on the forward planning skills of the legacy contracting authority. The professional skills deployed in producing traffic forecasts, planning operations and making due allowance for the safety factor are illustrated by means of examples taken from the various tram lines already in service. Emphasis is also placed on the need to ensure that all local protagonists are fully aware of the nature and importance of new tram line projects in order to obtain their full endorsement and support.
